Me, Myself and the Media
»Me, Myself and the Media« is a public laboratory intended to investigate the interference between electronic media and public, urban spaces.
»Me, Myself and the Media« will take place from 25 to 27 September 2009 at Spedition, Bremen, DE.
Electronic media play a fair role in shaping the development of today's cities. The project focusses on exploring digital, mobile and networked media and their impact on the perception and accessibility of public space.
While the use of cellphones and the internet have become trivial and self-evident, countless layers of communication are arising. These layers are omnipresent, yet invisible parts of physical spaces. The project seeks to investigate the ambivalences between hyper reality, control and self-empowerment in this area.
By using different media techniques and distinct questions, study groups will explore the interaction of media channels, data streams and physical spaces. Over a period of three days, the venue will be act as a public laboratory. Practical approaches will be tested publically. There will be working groups by My Wonderful Geo-Story (Hamburg/Stuttgart?), HybridVideoTracks (Berlin) and city.crime.control (Bremen/Hamburg?/Leeds?). Short inputs about the work and approaches of these groups will be held, as discussions about the impacts, structures, possibilities and downsides of an ongoing interrelation between digital and physical spaces. All working groups are open for participation.
Visitors are welcome to seek information at the bar and info area, to visit the events at the weekend or to join and contribute to the groups.
The Bar Hedy Lamarr will be the central meeting place of the laboratory. It is dedicated to Hollywood diva and inventor Hedy Lamarr. Along with George Antheil she invented the »Secret Communication System« in 1942, a method of frequency hopping, which become the base for today's mobile communication systems, like WLAN, Bluetooth and GSM.
As an opening of the project, a public panel will be held on the critique of the contemporary tendencies of a society of control on Thursday, 24 September 2009.
On Saturday, 26 September there will be a lecture on large scale urban development projects and its media-based production of images. This lecture is a result of a cooperation with »Arbeitsschwerpunkt Stadtraum« (Urban Space Working Group) of BUKO, which organizes a series of events from September to December in seven german cities.
At the end of the weekend, a joint final round on sunday evening will take place to discuss and reflect the various works and interim results. An outlook on further approaches and future issues will be undertaken.
